Sortie
Just a proof of concept, didn't finish the AI so it's just PvP for now.
How to play:
You'll need a deck of cards, a 4x4 grid, a friend, and 20 or so tokens/markers (coins work). Each player draws four cards to start. The grid is arranged diagonally, and three tokens should be put at the edge of the grid along the three closest squares to each player, representing flags. The object of the game is to capture each of the opponent's three flags by moving your units to the corresponding square.
At the beginning of your turn, draw a single card from the deck. Units consist of two cards overlapping each other; the card on the bottom represents the unit's hit points, while the card on top represents its attack. Units can be placed at any of the three closest squares that's unoccupied (regardless of if the corresponding token has been destroyed by the opponent), or at either of the two rear squares of a friendly unit; any number of units can be placed in a single turn. After the unit is on the board, place a token on top of it, representing a shield.
A unit cannot move or attack on the turn it's placed. On subsequent turns, each unit can move once to an adjacent square, and/or attack an adjacent opposing unit if present. However, once a unit has attacked, it is exhausted and cannot move for the rest of the turn. In other words, each turn a unit may:
- Attack an adjacent unit
- Move to an adjacent square
- Move to an adjacent square, then attack an adjacent unit
- (NOT allowed: attack, then move)
Every unit is un-exhausted at the beginning of a turn, and there is no limit on the number of units that can take their action during a turn. You are also free to place new units at any point before, after, or in-between unit actions.
When a unit attacks an opposing unit, one of three things happens; if the attacking unit's attack (i.e. the value of the card on top) is higher than the defending unit's hitpoints (i.e. the card on the bottom), the defending unit is immediately removed from the board and its cards discarded. If the attacking unit's attack is lower than the defending unit's hitpoints, the shield is broken and the token removed, but the unit remains. If a unit is attacked once again after its shield has been broken, the unit is immediately removed and discarded, regardless of any stats.
Once a friendly unit reaches one of the opponent's three flags, at the end of the turn, both the flag and the unit are removed. The match is won once all three have been captured.
